The company that leads the consortium for the reindustrialization of the Nissan plant in the Barcelona Free Zone, QEV Technologies, has presented a new brand of 100% electric vehicles, Zeroid, and plans to start production in 2023. The company has shown five van models, in the homologation phase, of which it hopes to manufacture 60,000 units per year in the next three years. “There are more than 1,000 people who knew how the factory worked, they knew how to make vehicles,” said the CEO of QEV, Joan Orús, in an attempt to recover former Nissan employees, fired due to the cessation of production at the plant on last December. In this sense, the person in charge of Zeroid has asked the administrations to speed up the new use of the 50,000 square meters of the plant “as a country responsibility” so that his brand and the others of the consortium can bring their products to the market ” as soon as possible”.

Two weeks after the reindustrialization board of the Nissan plant stated that it saw the project of a hub of various companies to recover activity in the Free Trade Zone space, QEV has specified what its bet is. The company, specialized since 2013 in sports vehicles and based in the Montmeló circuit, has shown a fleet of vans whose market price will range between 20,000 and 120,000 euros at the Nissan auditorium. Their capacities range from 700 to 4,500 kilos. Orús has advocated looking for a business client, from the logistics sector, and has pointed out that the bases of the vans can also be used for buses, of which he has also brought two units in the presentation. “We hope to have the factory ready by 2022 and start producing next year,” Orús assured.

QEV Technologies expects an entry of 200 million euros in the next three years and 800 taking into account all the companies included in the hub. Together with the Ebro brand, of the BTech company, Zeroid aims to reach a production of 100,000 vehicles per year at the plant in this period. Consortium partners include the Volta, Quantron, Lupa, Voltia, Ronn Motor and Tevva Trucks brands, all in the electric vehicle segment. Orús has explained that the hub It has been presented to the PERTE public aid to promote the electric vehicle. “We are in the middle of negotiating to obtain this aid”, he assured while saying that he expected an amount of between 100 and 150 million, between subsidies and long-term financing. The person in charge of Zeroid has spoken of a “proximity manufacturing” that nurtures “suppliers, universities, institutions and R&D centers”. However, he has added that in a first phase the batteries of his brand will be imported from Asia, and he hopes that in the future they will come from the “two or three factories that are preparing to open” in Spain. One of them is the Volkswagen Group, which last week announced that its plant will be located in Sagunto (Valencia) and did not rule out agreements with other brands.

“Not being able to count on the human value and the facilities would lengthen our growth a lot”, Orús has hypothesized about a scenario in which the proposal of the hub, in which he sees that he would have a “less automated” production like the one he had in mind “a year ago”. In fact, the QEV option was not the first of the administrations. At first, it was discarded and then recovered after the no of Great Wall Motor to occupy the plant in the Free Trade Zone.

He knows in depth all the sides of the coin.
